Ecommerce Shows Growth In 2008

Internet Retailer reported strong growth for the top 500 online merchants this year.  According to the article, combined ecommerce sales rose 19 percent in 2008 compared with a total retail grow of only 1 percent.  Even when the two largest e-businesses, Netflix.com and Costco.com, are excluded from the results, ecommerce growth still shines with a 14.4 percent increase over sales from 2007.  

There’s no doubt that ecommerce has shown its resilience during the economic recession.  Nikki Baird, managing partner at RSR Research believes that now more than ever, multi-channel retailers will invest heavily in ecommerce. “The growth is coming from the web,” Baird says. “Even as retailers look to contain costs, they are going to give priority to infrastructure projects that will produce the best return on investment and that’s going to happen online.”
